死亡金属（Death Metal）乐风以“鞭击金属”为其背景演化而成（受鞭击金属中Slayer乐团影响）。特点是充斥电吉他快速的反复，几无旋律的和弦，速击狂踩的双大鼓，主唱咬牙不清的低吟狂吼（死腔），歌词以死亡仇恨为主题，充满了尸体、内脏、肢解、分尸、奸尸、恋尸癖、食尸、虐待等字眼。“死亡金属”以来自佛罗里达州的重金属乐队最具代表性。代表性乐队：Death、Carcass、Cannibal Corpse、Suffocation等。

Death Metalis an extreme subgenre of heavy metal. It typically employs heavily distorted guitars, tremolo picking, deep growling vocals, blast beat drumming, minor keys or atonality, and complex song structures with multiple tempo changes.

敲击金属（Thrash Metal，或称激流金属，台湾称为鞭笞金属）属于重金属音乐中之一分支。最原始的敲击金属可以追溯到1970年代末80年代初。当相当数量的英国重金属新浪潮（New Wave Of British Heavy Metal）乐队开始将硬核（Hardcore）和朋克（Punk）等元素融入当中，这就产生了一种新的金属乐风格－敲击金属。连带的也产生了一种速度极快的金属风格，力量稍微比鞭击金属轻的风格——速度金属（Speed Metal）。 美国受敲击金属的影响甚深，故后来发展成为本土的力量金属，而代表者有Iced Earth和Nevermore。

Thrash Metalis a extreme subgenre of heavy metal that is characterized usually by its fast tempo and aggression. Songs of the genre typically use fast percussive and low-register guitar riffs, overlaid with shredding-style lead work.

碾核（Grindcore）属于一个音乐流派。当碾核这个名词经常与有些联系的死亡金属交换使用，这两个其实是有很大差别的，虽然有相似的特征，同样结构的音乐，特别是近些年来越来越相像。当它在80年代中期第一次露面的时候，碾核因它完美用短的篇章所组成的机构带起了重金属乐器风格上噪音演奏的一阵潮流（扭曲的吉他，贝斯和鼓声）。代表性乐队：Napalm Death，Brutal Truth，Terrorizer，Anal Cunt，Fuck...I"m Dead，Last Days Of Humanity，Disgorge（Mex），Cock And Ball Torture，Gut，Intestinal Disgorge，Abosranie Bogom等。

Grindcoreis an extreme metal and hardcore punk hybrid, most commonly associated with death metal and crust punk. It also draws inspiration from , industrial music, noise and the more extreme varieties of hardcore punk. It is characterized by heavily distorted, down-tuned guitars, blastbeats, hardcore punk and crossover thrash influenced riffing, short songs, and vocals which consist of incomprehensible growls, or high-pitched shrieks.
