TheVollkornis a chunky serif that started out in 2005, as a first attempt into type design by Friedrich Althausen, then a student at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Five years later, Vollkorn had grown into a full-fledged family with four styles, released under the SIL Open Font License.

Tagesschriftis a free font, too, available under a Creative Commons license. It was created by Yanone, another Weimar alumnus. The lively serif is the result of a workshop that Yanone gave at his Alma Mater in 2005. The whole design process took only one day, hence the name – Tagesschrift means day font. (Yanone admits that he needed another day to do the kerning, so technically, it is a two-day font.)
