The Linotype Devanagariª typeface extends the original design drawn by Matthew Carter in 1977, and the 1983 update for early digital image setters, under the art direction of Fiona Ross and Georgie Surman. The fonts now contain all the Devanagari glyphs specified in Unicode for OpenType¨ output. Inspired by the Nirnaya Sagar designs of the late 19th and early 20th century, the Linotype Devanagari design is a traditional text face in five weights and is suitable for a wide variety of applications. Its traditional style melded with open counters ensures high levels of legibility at small sizes and modest resolution. Linotype Devanagari is also a compact design, providing economy of space in a variety of environments. The extensive character set enables the setting of Hindi, Marathi, Nepali and is suitable for Sanskrit passages. |
