Erik Spiekermann conceived the ITC Officina¨ typeface family to bridge the gap between typewriter output and traditional typography. The design goal was to create a small family of type ideally suited to the tasks of office correspondence and business documentation. Midway through the design, however, it became obvious that the typeface had capabilities far beyond its original intention. Production tests showed that ITC Officina could stand on its own as a highly legible and remarkably functional type style.
Officina Serif and Officina Sans were first released in 1990, in two weights of book and bold Ð each with complementary italic designs. In 1998, Spiekermann, in collaboration with Ole Schfer, added new weights of medium, extra bold and black to the serif and sans designs. In 2003, Spiekermann drew four roman ÒdisplayÓ designs of ITC Officina Sans optimized for large sizes. |
