Charles Rennie Mackintosh was driven to control every imaginable facet of his work. His Art Nouveau influenced lettering on his architectural drawings, posters, book jackets and leaflets he designed was also characteristically controlled. There was, however, never a typeface family based on his lettering Ð until Phill Grimshaw drew the ITC Rennie Mackintoshª suite of designs in 1996. The typeface family captured the spirit of MackintoshÕs lettering in his cap-only family of light and bold weights, accompanied by suites of initial letters and ornaments. In 2017, the original design was reimagined by Monotype Studio designers with lowercase characters, a new weight structure of light, regular and a more robust bold design, each with an italic counterpart. In addition, the character set was enlarged to include support for many Eastern European languages, including Cyrillic and Greek. These new weights can be combined with GrimshawÕs original ornament and initial character fonts. |
